David writes "I have been writing poetry for at least 25 years. I attended UNCW where I earned my B.A. in English with a N.C. teaching license. I have not published in academic/literary journals. I have been published by small, independent concerns, primarily and that was some time ago. I have started a small press of my own called Shakin’ Outta My Heart. I pretty much run it right off my computer. I am also a songwriter, lead vocalist and drummer.
My poetry is hard for me to describe, really. …I probably have a hundred influences. When I was a child I didn’t really dream of being an astronaut or even a professional wrestler. I wanted to be Boris Karloff or Vincent Price.
Poetry is about making manifest other realities. That reality which is the underside of conciousness: subconciousness; the dream state. I like to use language to give shape and spatial dimension to dreams and their images. When we dream, we speak to ourselves in abstractions that have deep-rooted, symbolic significance to our wakeful selves. Poetry is a way of drawing out from our subconcious that which has significance in our concious, waking lives. The responsibility of a writer should be to make language live. More specifically, the poet’s responsibility is the make language become.
I guess my biggest influences would have to be Galway Kinnel, Noam Chomsky and the Ramones."
