What I've learned - Poetry by Bruce Whealton

Now and again, I think of all
    I've learned – all my education….
    Wondering what purpose there is
In so much knowledge and so many skills.

    Six college classes in Calculus!...
    And now it frustrates me
    That I can't perform those
    Operations on equations…

    I've learned and relearned Spanish
Over the years but can't hardly speak
It now. It's back to the beginning again.

I've learned (and forgotten about) how
    To perform Electrical and
    Computer Engineering designs and operations.
    Was that a waste?

And what of my advanced graduate training
In Psychology, Clinical Social Work, Hypnosis?
    Are these meaningless pursuits?
The mind imposes a certain order within,
But are the connections still there?

It's like when I met my friend Paul, again,
Whom, I'd not seen before in years…
I came to remember, why we were best friends,
And to realize that nothing was lost.
