Why you should never wear mascara to a funeral:
because it leaves little dark fans on the face
of the patriarch when you embrace, and he tells you
he’s outlived four wars and four sons;
because between each lash will slither
the stench of condolence flowers
and it’s a hard smell to forget;
because looking down one last time
to the woman in her wedding dress
means tiny splash bruises on her lips;
because if the dead rises like a Lazarus from his container,
he will cloud your eyes, sticky with mourning
and you will miss your chance to say goodbye.
