earthbound
smoke billowing from our mouths and
the tips of our cigarettes
we stood in a tryst we never planned
it's cold she said
casually cracking the silence
shuffling her soles against the pavement
her shiver was contagious
rivers welled around our shoes
we stood at the centre of something ordinary
something mundane and unimportant that
we couldn’t shake off as easily
as we shook the raindrops from our hair
my feet were still wet when i climbed into bed
i pulled the covers around me like a cocoon
they smelled of soap powder and a good drying wind
the rain beat the blues against my window.
